How the Houthis in Yemen have changed international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab

Ansar Allah's decision regarding ships passing by Yemen have included ships flying the flags of other countries and heading to Israel. This has prompted many international shipping companies to change the routes of their ships to pass by the Cape of Good Hope.

Observers believe that the Ansar Allah group has imposed a new reality on navigation in the Red Sea. But these moves by Sanaa, Yemen's capital, will have repercussions, whether military or political. The main dilemma is that there are targets in Sanaa, Gulf and American, at which Houthi missiles can aim, which may expand the scope of the war in the region, which is what Washington DC does not want. However, Washington DC may negotiate and stop the Gaza war, which has entered third month.

Repercussions

What are the repercussions of Ansar Allah's military operations against ships heading to Israel and the expected reactions given the targeting of American interests by resistance forces in several countries in the region?

Akram Al-Haj, a Yemeni political analyst in Sanaa, says that the Ansar Allah group was able to dominate the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, and thus impose new operations in the Middle East.

Al-Haj added that the operations carried out by the Yemeni army from Sanaa, the seizure of ships belonging to Israel or dealing with it, and its control in the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait has caused Israel great economic losses, according to Israeli newspapers.

He also said that many regional parties had confirmed that the Ansar Allah group was able to have the upper hand in the war waged by the Israeli army on the Gaza Strip and on the Palestinian territories in general. Consequently, it was able to reach the heart of Israel with its missiles and drones.

Options and possibilities

Al-Haj also said: "Certainly, the Ansar Allah group does not make any statement or threat without having calculated all the options, possibilities, and reactions. The group did not make a statement randomly, and I believe that its statements are based on a strong reality on the ground, and the Israelis and Americans know very well that Sanaa's statements must be taken seriously."

The political analyst said that Israeli and American statements and threats have not stopped since the Ansar Allah announcement regarding navigation in the Red Sea. More importantly, however, Tel Aviv and Washington DC know very well that any response to the Ansar Allah movements will cost them a lot and that Sanaa has a group of targets in the region that can be aimed at in response to any movement. This has put Washington DC under pressure and the US government must make some very difficult choices.

Moreover, the war that the Ansar Allah group has been waging against the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia for eight years has given it considerable ability and strength to confront any intervention against it.

Abdul Sattar Al-Shamiri, the Yemeni political researcher, believes that what is happening in the Red Sea on the part of Ansar Allah certainly changes conditions outside the normal rules of engagement. Al-Shamiri said: "There is no doubt that these transformations and threats will harm all countries of the world, especially the countries of the region, not to mention the oil-exporting countries and the Egyptian Suez Canal, as well as Yemeni interests as a result of the high cost of tankers and shipping arriving in Yemen."
